Starting your fitness journey can feel overwhelming.
You open social media and suddenly everyone is telling you to wake up at 4 a.m., cut out carbs, drink a gallon of water, do fasted cardio, and train six days a week.
No wonder so many people quit before they even begin!!
If there is one thing I’ve learned after years of coaching thousands of women, it’s this:
The people who succeed aren’t the ones who do the most…they’re the ones who stay consistent with the basics.
So if you’re just getting started, here are the exact things I would focus on.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to change everything overnight. They go from never exercising to training six days per week. They cut out every food they enjoy. They set goals that require perfection instead of consistency.
And then, a few weeks later, they burn out.
Instead, focus on building a few habits that you can actually maintain.
Small changes feel insignificant in the moment, but compounded over time, they completely transform your life.
Wanting to lose weight is fine.
But why?
Your reason matters because motivation is never there when you need it to be.
There will be days when you don’t want to meal prep. Days when the gym sounds miserable. Days when progress feels slow.
Your “why” is what keeps you moving when motivation disappears.
Write it down. Hang it on the fridge or your bathroom mirror & look at it often.
I always tell my clients that fitness should fit into your life, not become your entire life.
Before worrying about advanced training methods or supplements, focus on these fundamentals:
The basics aren’t glamorous, but they work.
And honestly? Most people don’t need more information.
They need more consistency.
You do not have to earn your health back after one bad meal. You do not have to restart on Monday. You do not need a perfect week to make progress.
Life will happen.Vacations will happen. Birthdays, holidays, sick kids, stressful work weeks, they’re all part of the journey. The goal isn’t to avoid these things, it’s about learning how to be consistent and adapt, even when the conditions aren’t ideal.
The people who succeed long-term are not the people who never fall “off track.”
They’re the people who don’t throw in the towel every time life gets messy.
Decision fatigue is real.
Walking into the gym without knowing what to do can feel intimidating, especially when you’re new. Having a structured program removes the guesswork and gives you confidence.
Whether it’s hiring a coach, joining an app (like mine!), or following a beginner strength program (I have lots of options here!), having a roadmap makes consistency so much easier.
You don’t need the perfect plan. You just need a plan you can stick to.
This might be the most important lesson of all:
Your fitness journey is not a 12-week project.
It’s a lifelong commitment to taking care of yourself. There will be seasons where you make incredible progress. There will be seasons where maintenance is progress.
I’ve been through so much in my own fitness journey: college athletics, bodybuilding prep, nursing school, entrepreneurship, pregnancy, postpartum, half marathons, opening a gym, and now navigating fitness as a working mom of two.
Every season has looked different. But the one thing that remained constant was that no matter what, I continued to show up for myself. Progress won’t be linear. Just give yourself grace and keep going!
If you’re starting completely from scratch, here’s exactly what I recommend:
Remember: you don’t have to do everything at once! You only have to keep taking the next small step. Focus on how you can become 1% better each day.
Because small habits, done consistently, are what create big results.
And if nobody has told you this lately:
I believe in you. You are capable of hard things. Start before you feel ready, give yourself grace, and focus on consistency over perfection! No matter what decision you make, just know it is going to be hard. Choose your hard.
